Hemophilia Medication
All hemophilia medication used to be derived from human plasma, which was dangerous for people with hemophilia. In the 1980s many people, as many as 80% of people with hemophilia, contracted the HIV virus. However, with the approval of recombinant DNA technology to produce factor using other animal cells, infusing with factor has become much safer.
There are still a few types of hemophilia that require human plasma derived factor. The viral inactivation process is pretty thorough, and these medications are generally considered safe. There are several large pharmaceutical companies that manufacture blood coagulation factor. These are a few of the brand name factors out there: Factor for VIII deficiency | Product name | Source | Helixate ®FS Kogenate®FS Advate® Recombinate® ReFacto® Koate®-DVI Monoclate-P® Hemofil M® | recombinant recombinant recombinant recombinant recombinant plasma plasma plasma | Factor for IX deficiency | Product name | Source | Mononine® AlphaNine® SD BeneFIX® Profilnine® SD Bebulin® VH | plasma plasma recombinant plasma plasma | Factor for von Willebrand's disease | Product name | Source | Alphanate® Humate®-P | plasma plasma | IMPORTANT NOTICE - The information provided herein is a summary of available information only.
